Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
The key place for daily worship in the city. Its a true symbol of dedication, determination, patience and dreams of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan(1918-2004) also known as Baba Zayed. He was the founding father of the UAE and was also the ruler of Abu Dhabi for more than 30 years. You would also find his picture on AED 100 notes. He dreamt of making the most beautiful and largest mosque in the world.
Comprises of 82 domes, 1092 pillars, 7 costly chandeliers, and the world’s largest Ali Khalilis carpet of 60,000 square feet, it’s truly grand within itself. Followed by capacity of more than 40,000 worshippers who can pray at the same time.
$545 million were spend to build this unique mosque. Construction was started in 1996 and completed in 2007. The marble used in this mosque is one of the most costliest marble in the world– Karera marble which costs around $400 per square meter. Exactly…Don’t get shocked! It’s very true! So if you don’t visit it, you would miss seeing a great masterpiece. The feeling is different only when you step inside the premises. You would roam around the mosque with a ‘wow’ face! It’s very beautiful and also the pride of Abu Dhabi.
When beauty bends with uniqueness and that’s the sight you would find inside the mosque. Completely unbelievable mastery of work and concept. The antique chandelier in the prayer hall weighs 12 tons making it the largest chandelier ever used in a mosque. You would also find golden colour designs at top of the pillars which resembles palm trees which shows the economic strength of the UAE.
